Two people died, and a third was seriously injured after a tire exploded on the premises of Delta Air Lines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Tuesday morning, officials said.
The explosion occurred in the airport’s service area as the tire was being removed, killing a Delta employee and a contractor, and seriously injuring another airline worker, according to local outlet WSB2.
Delta Air Lines confirmed the deaths and injuries of its employees in a statement.
«The Delta family is saddened by the loss of two team members and the injury of another as a result of this morning’s incident at the Atlanta Technical Operations Center (TOC 3)», - the statement read. «We are providing full support to the families and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time».
«The Delta family is grateful for the swift action of first responders and medical teams on the scene».
Delta did not specify the exact incident that led to the deaths and injuries, but a union representing airport workers cited reports of a tire explosion.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a union representing aviation industry workers in North America, expressed condolences to the victims' families in light of the tire explosion reports.
«As a union dedicated to the well-being and safety of our members and the broader community, we will provide our resources to all those affected by this tragic event», - the union’s statement read. «We stand in unity with Delta workers during this difficult time and urge Delta and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into how this happened».
Earlier on Tuesday morning, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said that the fire department and rescue teams, Atlanta police, and airport teams were on the scene and «working diligently to resolve the situation».
«I express my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees», - Dickens wrote. «My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their quick and full recovery».
