Tragedy in Idaho: firefighters attacked by a lone gunman

The community in Idaho is shocked by a horrific incident that occurred on Sunday, June 29, in Kootenai County. Authorities announced that an armed individual set fire and attacked firefighters through an ambush, resulting in the deaths of two members of their team, and a third suffered serious injuries.
At the time of publication, the identity of the suspected shooter had not been revealed. Police reported that the shooter was found dead on Kane Field Mountain with weapons nearby. Officers at the scene exchanged gunfire with the shooter, but it is unclear whether the police killed him.
The suspected shooter’s motivation is still unclear to officials, who are calling it a «cowardly act» and an ambush.
Around 1:00 PM local time on June 29, firefighters were called to extinguish brush on Kane Field Mountain near the city of Coeur d’Alene, a region in northwest Idaho. The fire spread to approximately 20 acres overnight, NBC News reports. By 2:00 PM local time, firefighters reported being attacked. Around 300 law enforcement personnel from various agencies arrived at the scene.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris told reporters at a press conference that the shooting was a «complete ambush» by the shooter.
«We believe… that the suspect set the fire, and we believe it was an ambush, and it was intentional», - Norris said, according to NBC News. «It was a complete ambush. These firefighters had no chance».
Chairman of the Kootenai County Board of Commissioners Bruce Mataré said at a press conference: «June 29, 2025 — a day we will not forget in this community. It is a day when evil showed its face, and we lost two outstanding professionals of the highest quality. And I cannot understand why someone would commit such a cowardly act. Such senseless violence is unheard of here».
