On Monday, April 29, the police received a call around 3:20 p.m. reporting that a car had crashed into the building of the after-school program called YNOT Outdoors in Chatham, Illinois, according to the Associated Press. Chatham is located outside of Springfield.
The police stated that the incident does not appear to be a deliberate attack. After the tragedy, YNOT released a statement on their website. It says: «Please pray for the families of Chatham YNOT and our staff. We really need it».
The police announced that as a result of the accident in Chatham, three children and one young adult died. The coroner clarified that the names of the deceased children will be released after their families have been notified, according to AP.
The victims' names are 7-year-old Alma Bunkemp, 7-year-old Katherine Corley, 8-year-old Ainslie Johnson, and 18-year-old Riley Britton, as reported by the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office, according to CNN. Six more children were hospitalized, one of them in critical condition.
Marianna Eakers was identified as the driver of the car involved in the accident at the Chatham after-school camp. She is 44 years old and is not in custody. Although Eakers was not injured, she was taken to the hospital for evaluation, according to CNN.
The reason why Eakers presumably crashed into the school building in Chatham is currently unknown
