The tragedy occurred when a tourist submarine sank off the coast of Egypt on Thursday, March 27, 2025. According to the Russian embassy and Egyptian state media, the submarine was in the middle of a planned excursion, exploring a coral reef, when it went down in the Red Sea, claiming the lives of several people on board.
This is not the first time a tourist vessel has encountered problems. In November 2024, four people drowned after an Egyptian diving tourist boat was hit by huge waves and sank within minutes. Earlier in the same year, in June, a separate boat sank due to storm damage.
Details of the incident are still unclear as authorities investigate the incident. The operator of the submarine has an experienced «expert team», - and its submarines were «designed in Finland to withstand underwater pressure up to 75 meters, ensuring safety and reliability», - according to CNN.
One survivor of the submarine accident told Russian media that as soon as passengers took their seats, water began to «pour» in because two hatches were open. He added that the boat felt like it had detached from «what it was attached to».
It is unclear what led to the crash, but according to reports, Egyptian authorities are investigating the incident to determine the cause.
According to several sources such as Reuters and CNN, there were 45 tourists of various nationalities on board the submarine, including Russians, Swedes, Indians, and Norwegians. Thirty-nine people were rescued, and CNN reported that at least 21 people are in the hospital.
Reuters reported that there were only 50 people on board the submarine: 45 tourists and five Egyptian crew members.
At least six people died in the sinking of the submarine on March 27, according to the Russian embassy and Egyptian media. The deceased victims — all Russians, according to various sources, and two of them, reportedly, were children. The age of the deceased passengers is still unknown
