Two months before he was supposed to return to boxing, Ricky Hatton passed away at the age of 46. Naturally, fans and friends in the sports world were shocked and wanted to know the cause of his death, which has not been confirmed yet. However, some may remember that Hatton openly spoke about health problems in recent years — particularly mental health and drugs.

Below, Hollywood Life breaks down what we know about Hatton’s life before his death.

In August 2023, Hatton sat down with the Daily Mail to discuss the aftermath of his fights with Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, both of which he lost.

«After the fight with Mayweather, I started drinking a lot more, and eventually fell out with my parents, and it was hard for me, and I didn’t care if I was alive or dead», - Hatton said, admitting that he «thought about suicide many times. I started thinking of different ways to overcome this, and I thought I could drink myself to death».

Hatton clarified, admitting that he «couldn't walk down the street» after his defeats, because he was «so humiliated», - adding: «I didn’t want to show my face. I know it sounds strange, but that’s how it was in my head».

«I thought everyone was looking at me and saying, 'He told us he would beat Mayweather, and he didn’t do it'», - explained the late world champion. «It's really sad, but that was the beginning of my health problems».

Hatton also worried that his son Campbell Hatton might inherit his late father’s problems.

«There's a chance that Campbell might face the same health problems as me», - Hatton said. «I told Campbell, 'If you have something on your mind, come to me'. I was almost not here to enjoy what I love today. Spending time with my grandfather and seeing Campbell become a professional. Seeing my girls turn into young ladies today. I was almost not here to experience that, because I was a suicide. So I will be pressing him every day, asking if everything is okay».

In the same interview with the Daily Mail, Hatton pointed to his past drug use in addition to alcohol. «Therefore, I became even more depressed, and eventually I started taking drugs to allow myself to drink more, and it was a vicious circle», - he said.

In mid-2018, a video of Hatton using cocaine surfaced, and he went to rehab, according to various sources.

The official cause of Hatton’s death has not been established at the time of publication. Authorities were called to Hatton’s home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, England, where he was found dead. Greater Manchester Police noted that his death is not considered «suspicious» in an official statement.
