Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has died in what appears to be a murder-suicide. His wife, Serena Fairfax, was also found dead in their home. This news comes several years after Fairfax’s political career began to unravel due to allegations of sexual assault from two women.

On April 16, 2026, the Fairfax County police responded to a 911 call from the home of the deceased Democrat in Annandale, Virginia, shortly after midnight. According to Police Chief Kevin Davis, the shooting was apparently related to an ongoing domestic dispute in a «complicated or contentious divorce». Fairfax was scheduled to appear in court for the divorce proceedings.

«Half of America is probably going through a divorce process at some point in time, and fortunately, it very rarely ends in this way», - Davis noted. «This is very sad for this community… many people who know the Fairfax family are in shock. We are in shock».

Davis also emphasized that Fairfax’s two teenagers were at home when the shooting occurred.

«It is tragic for the children to lose both parents, especially tragic that they were home when this happened», - Davis added. «This is certainly a fall from grace for a relatively well-known family that seemed to have many positive moments».

Fairfax County police believe that Fairfax fatally shot his wife Serena before turning the gun on himself. It appears that the weapon used in the shooting was the same.

Fairfax was accused of sexual assault by two women. In 2019, a woman named Meredith Watson accused Fairfax of «premeditated and aggressive» assault when they were both students at Duke University in 2000. She claimed they were friends but were not in a romantic relationship. Watson’s legal advisor, Smith Mullen, stated at the time that «Ms. Watson shared her account of the assault with friends in a series of emails and Facebook messages that we now have. Additionally, we have testimony from former classmates confirming that Ms. Watson immediately told friends that Mr. Fairfax raped her».

Another woman, Vanessa Tyson, a professor from California, accused Fairfax of sexual assault during the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004.

In response, Fairfax denied the allegations in a statement, calling them «demonstrably false», - according to CNN.

«I have never forced anyone», - he wrote. «I demand a full investigation into these baseless and false allegations. Such an investigation will confirm my account because I am telling the truth. I will clear my good name, and I have nothing to hide».
