Hayden Panettiere was not given time to privately mourn the loss of her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere. After his sudden death in February 2019, the actress from the «Scream» franchise faced constant questions about her late brother, who also worked in the entertainment industry. Jansen’s death came as a shock to many — he was only 28 years old and passed away due to health complications.
At the time, the Panettiere family released a statement to TODAY, thanking the public for «the love and support shown to our family as we grieve this unimaginable loss [sic]».
«Jansen's soul was visible in his eyes, his charm in his brilliant, attractive smile; his soul in his masterful and revealing paintings, and the joy of life in his dry humor», - the statement read. «His charisma, warmth, compassion for others, and his creative spirit will live forever in our hearts and in the hearts of all he met. … We love you so much, Jansen, and you will forever remain in our hearts».
Learn more about Jansen, his career, health, and more below.
Like Hayden, Jansen was an actor. He began his film career in the early 2000s, appearing in episodes of TV shows including «The Walking Dead» and voicing roles. Among his most famous films are «Counterfeit» and «Eastern Fighter». Before his death, Jansen was working on several films, including «American Game», «Horse», and «Angel of Justice», which are expected to be released posthumously.
Prior to Jansen’s death, no health issues or medical obstacles were ever disclosed to the public. However, his death was caused by a complication with his heart.
According to the Panettiere family’s public statement, Jansen passed away from cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart.
«While this brings little comfort, a medical expert has reported that Jansen’s sudden death was caused by cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), in combination with complications of the aortic valve», - the statement read.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, cardiomegaly is a condition that burdens the heart. In those who suffer from it, the heart is larger than considered normal, and this condition can be either temporary or permanent. An enlarged heart has problems with effective blood circulation and therefore can cause other complications, including heart failure or stroke.
According to the website, a common cause of an enlarged heart is ischemic heart disease. However, it is unclear whether Jansen was ever diagnosed with such a condition. Other causes of this condition include arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, hypertensive heart disease, and more.
Cardiomegaly can be diagnosed through a chest X-ray, cardiac CT scan, or electrocardiogram (ECG)
