A 16-year-old girl named Josselin Korea Escalante was killed, and two other students were injured. The injured students were taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Clinic for medical assistance. The shooter shot himself and died from self-inflicted wounds.
The shooter from Antioch High School was identified by the Nashville Metropolitan Police as Solomon Henderson, a 17-year-old student at the school. Solomon reportedly began posting an online diary on October 18, consisting of 288 pages including selfies and screenshots, according to NewChannel5. The Nashville Metropolitan Police have not yet confirmed the authenticity of the online diary. The police also seized boxes of materials from Solomon’s home.
The day after the shooting, Mayor Freddie O’Connell held a press conference. The mayor warned the public about a new fund created through the Middle Tennessee Community Foundation to help prevent school shootings. Funds from the foundation will be directed to the victims and families affected by the school shooting. The mayor also shared information about organizations where community members can receive psychological assistance. O’Connell stated, «In Nashville, when tragedies occur, we know how resilient this community is and how we all come together to help. This makes us all 'secondary responders' to tragedy, and this spirit of unity is inspiring», - as reported by The Tennessean.
The director of the Metropolitan Public Schools, Dr. Adrienne Battle, released a statement to «thank the school staff who quickly and heroically followed emergency protocols, possibly preventing further harm». The statement said, «To give students and staff time to grieve, Antioch High School will be closed for the remainder of the week.
