In recent years, violence in schools across the United States has unfortunately intensified. Although many mass shootings garnered attention during the 2000s, the latest tragedy occurred at a school in the state of Texas between two teenagers. A 17-year-old teenager named Carmelo Anthony was charged with first-degree murder in the alleged killing of another 17-year-old teenager named Austin Metcalf. After a judge lowered Anthony’s bail, he was released from jail under certain conditions.
Follow updates on Anthony’s case and trial below.
Anthony is a 17-year-old teenager from Frisco, Texas, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Metcalf’s death.
Anthony was charged with Metcalf’s murder at a track meet in Frisco in early April 2025. According to CBS News, witnesses claimed to have seen Metcalf and Anthony arguing, and Anthony allegedly pulled out a knife and struck Metcalf in the chest once. At the scene of the alleged murder on April 2, Anthony cooperated with the police and was arrested. While in the police car, Anthony asked the officers if Metcalf would recover. Metcalf was pronounced dead.
Two weeks later, Anthony was released from Collin County Jail after a judge lowered his bail from 1 million to 250 thousand dollars. According to CBS News, the conditions of his release require him to wear a tracking bracelet, stay at his parents' home, always be supervised by adults, and avoid contact with classmates.
Both the Metcalf family and the Anthony family were present at the hearing when Anthony was released on bail.
According to The Independent, Anthony’s lawyer, Mike Howard, implied in a statement that his client would claim self-defense.
«Every Texan has the right to defend themselves when they reasonably fear for their life», - Howard told reporters. «Self-defense is a defense that applies to each of us. Every story has two sides. Carmelo is a 17-year-old guy and an excellent student. He is the captain of his track team and the captain of the football team. This is a tragedy for both families».
Reports indicate that a fundraiser was active on the GoFundMe platform for Anthony, but it was removed. A platform representative explained to The Independent in a statement that «we prohibit fundraising for legal defense against violent crimes».
