The tragic death of Lisa Marie Presley: heart attack at 54 years old

Lisa Marie Presley died of a heart attack at the age of 54 on January 12, 2023, just five months after writing a touching essay about grief following the death of her only son Benjamin Keough, who took his own life two years ago. «I have dealt with death, grief, and loss since I was 9 years old. I have had more than anyone else, and somehow I made it here», - wrote Lisa Marie, referring to the death of her father, rock icon Elvis Presley. «But this, the death of my beautiful, beautiful son? No. Just no… no no no no…» However, the message ended on a more hopeful note when Lisa Marie revealed that she was working through her pain. With her passing, Lisa Marie’s remaining children — Riley Keough and twins Harper and Finley Lockwood — were to begin the grieving process anew.
In July 2020, Benjamin was found dead in the Los Angeles suburb of Calabasas. At the time, Lisa Marie’s representative told Hollywood Life, «She is completely heartbroken, inconsolable, and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11-year-old twins and older daughter Riley». The representative added, «She adored that boy. He was the love of her life». The young man’s death was ruled a suicide after he shot himself in the chest.
Benjamin was the son of Lisa and her ex-husband Danny Keough, as well as the grandson of the late Elvis Presley and Priscilla. Elvis remains one of the most successful performers of all time, with 149 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and 18 number ones. Ben is the second oldest of Lisa’s four children and somewhat unnoticed among his famous clan.
Benjamin bears a striking resemblance to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, which often delights Elvis fans. «Ben looks so much like Elvis. He was on Oprah and was a quiet storm behind the scenes», - his proud mother Lisa told CMT in 2012. «Everyone turned and looked when he was there. Everyone was grabbing him for photos because it’s just uncanny», - she added.
Lisa often dedicated songs to her children, and Ben inspired her 2012 song «Storm And Grace». In the song, she sings about Ben — who was 19 at the time — growing up too fast. «Stop right there, and then take your foot off the gas. My heart can’t take it, your storm and your grace», - she sings. She accompanied the song with a beautiful music video featuring family photos.
Like his grandfather and mother, Ben was reportedly musical. At just 17, there were reports that he had signed a $ 5 million contract with Universal Records to record up to five albums — however, Universal representatives later denied these reports as false. «This story is absolutely false», - said Peter LoFrumento, executive vice president of Universal Music Group at the time.
Ben is the younger brother of Riley Keough, who recently starred in the independent horror film The Lodge. She also appeared in the romantic/mystery Earthquake Bird and the TV series The Girlfriend Experience. Riley married Ben Smith-Petersen in 2015. Ben also has twin half-siblings, Finley and Harper, through his mother.
