The second season of the series 1923 began with the inscription «in memory» in memory of the late cast member Cole Briggs Plenty, who passed away at the age of 27 last year. Plenty played the role of Many Clouds in the first season. Fans are faced with a mystery surrounding Plenty’s death and many want to learn more about him, including his career and the circumstances of his death.
Read on to learn more about Plenty and what we know about his tragic death.
According to IMDB, Plenty was known for his work in the films «The Ballad of Jim Bridger» and «Into the Wild» before being cast in the series 1923.
According to ICT News, Plenty was an actor of the Mnikonju Lakota people from the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota.
When Plenty was found dead by the police, authorities stated that they did not suspect foul play. The Johnson County judge sealed all court documents related to Plenty’s death, according to The Kansas City Star newspaper. The sheriff’s office noted in an email that they would not disclose any more information about the case at the request of Plenty’s family, the publication reported.
The cause of Plenty’s death is still unclear. In March 2024, his family filed a missing person report after an alleged incident of domestic violence. His body was found a week later near an abandoned car in Kansas City, Missouri.
Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart called Plenty’s case «tragic» for «all involved», - noting that the police department «worked very hard to investigate the incidents and find Cole».
«None of us could have imagined such an outcome», - Lockhart said in a public statement. «Through this series of events, I have learned that our police department needs to work harder to build trust with our Native American community members. Meeting with Cole’s family members and representatives of our Native American community, I clearly see that we are not where we should be in partnership with the community, which is very important to Lawrence’s history and modern culture. This sad series of events has been spread worldwide. I hope that the future bridges we build and partnerships we form between our Native American community and our police department will create relationships that not only strengthen trust and understanding, but also serve as a model for other communities».
Friend and colleague from the Yellowstone universe Jeremy Gauna took over the role of Clouds. Showrunner Taylor Sheridan recast the role before filming began in July 2024 for the second season of the series 1923.
Before the premiere of the second season in February 2025, Gauna opened up in an interview with the Los Angeles Times about the responsibility he felt in honor of Plenty.
«I'm doing this not for anything else but to make sure everyone remembers and honors him», - Gauna insisted. «I understand that this is my goal. Some people may not fully realize it, but I fully realize it, and Cole was with me throughout the entire process»
