Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump fiercely competed for key battleground states in their efforts to win the 2024 presidential election.

On November 5, the final votes were counted, adding to more than 78 million early votes, and the tense race ultimately revealed the winner. Here’s everything you need to know after the election.

Trump was declared the elected president after securing both the popular vote and the electoral college. Now he intends to serve as the 47th President of the United States, after previously holding the position of the 45th.

Although the vote count is still ongoing, according to the Associated Press, at the moment Trump holds 51 percent of the popular vote, while Harris has 47.5 percent. Trump has gathered over 71.7 million votes, while Harris has received over 66.9 million. The last time a Republican candidate achieved such a victory was in 2004, when President George Bush won re-election against Democratic candidate John Kerry. Bush received about three million more votes than Kerry, as well as 286 electoral college votes.

By Wednesday morning, Trump had received 279 electoral college votes, while Harris had 223. State by state, Trump surpassed his 2020 results, while Harris struggled to replicate Joe Biden’s success in winning the presidency four years ago.

The seven key battleground states — Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — were the main focus of both candidates, but ultimately Trump emerged as the winner. He secured victories in North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Harris has not yet conceded defeat. On Tuesday evening, Harris was supposed to speak at her campaign event at Howard University in Washington, D.C., a historically black college where she completed her bachelor’s degree. However, the planned appearance was canceled.

Before the results became clear, she assured her staff that the close race was «exactly what we were prepared for».

Harris’s campaign co-chair, Cedric Richmond, also noted:

«We will continue, through the night, to fight to ensure that every vote is counted, that every voice is heard. So you won’t hear from the vice president today, but you will hear from her tomorrow»
