Donald Trump deployed the National Guard of the United States in Washington today, Monday, August 11, and spoke to journalists from the White House briefing room to discuss his decision. The 79-year-old Republican president effectively placed the Washington police under federal control by activating the National Guard.
As part of the National Guard activation, between 100 and 200 soldiers will be deployed to support law enforcement in the Washington area. During their deployment, soldiers will be assigned various tasks, including administrative and/or presence to «support» the police.

Trump deployed the National Guard due to the clearly unmanageable crime happening in the city, he stated during his announcement on August 11. The president called the crime «bloodshed» and «poverty» in his speech.
«I am taking historic action to save our capital from crime, bloodshed, disorder, and even worse», - Trump said from the White House briefing room. He added, «Today is Liberation Day in Washington, and we will reclaim our capital».
A day before his deployment announcement, the president turned to Truth Social to declare that he wants homeless people to leave «far away from» Washington.
«Homeless must leave, IMMEDIATELY», - Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday, August 10. «We will provide you with places to live, but FAR AWAY from the capital. Criminals, you don’t need to leave. We will put you in jail, where you belong. … There will be no 'MR. NICE GUY'. We want to reclaim our capital. Thank you for your attention to this issue! [sic]»
Trump referred to Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, enacted in 1973. According to the law, the Home Rule Act was «the result of the residents' constant desire for control over their own local affairs. The existing local government is the most extensive form of self-government since the establishment of the District as the seat of the federal government».
