Donald Trump’s activity on social media has always attracted attention, whether it be his retweets of controversial posts or lengthy messages on Truth Social. However, a recently deleted video featuring former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama sparked outrage, even among his fellow party members, due to its racist undertones. The video was posted on a Republican account on Thursday, February 5, and removed on Friday.

The clip focused on unfounded allegations of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which was won by former President Joe Biden. At the end of the video, Barack (64) and Michelle (62) were depicted as cartoon monkeys, with the background music featuring the song «The Lion Sleeps Tonight».

Comparing a Black person to a monkey is a long-standing racist stereotype. February is Black History Month, which celebrates the achievements and contributions of Black Americans. Barack Obama, in turn, was the first Black president in U.S. history.

White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt defended the video on Truth Social, calling it simply an «internet meme» comparing Donald to the King of the Jungle from the 1994 Disney film «The Lion King».

«This video is from an internet meme depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from 'The Lion King'», - Levitt said. «Please stop the fake outrage and report on something that actually matters to the American public».

However, shortly before noon Eastern Time, the video was removed. One official told CNN that the video was posted in error by an unspecified staff member.

«A White House staffer mistakenly posted this», - the statement read. «It has been removed».

The clip provoked widespread outrage across the country. Junior Senator from South Carolina Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, called the post «the most racist thing he has ever seen from the White House».

«I pray this is fake because this is the most racist thing I’ve seen from this White House», - Scott wrote on Twitter, adding, «The president needs to take this down».

Barack and Michelle Obama have yet to comment on the deleted video
