Donald Trump signed an order that will end all DEI programs in the government. This statement has caused shock and confusion across the United States, as many are wondering if it will affect them and their work. Others do not know what DEI is and what its significance is in the federal work process.
Find out what roles and departments DEI play in the federal work process and more about Trump’s order below.
DEI stands for diversity, equity, and inclusion. DEI programs were gradually introduced into federal programs after the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law was created to prevent any discrimination in the workplace based on religion, race, sexual orientation, etc.
Trump signed an order to terminate all DEI programs in the government. According to a White House statement, Trump considers DEI and DEIA policies «illegal» and asserts that they «violate the text and spirit of our long-standing federal civil rights laws» and «also undermine our national unity, as they deny, refute, and undermine traditional American values of hard work, excellence, and individual achievement in favor of an illegal, destructive, and corrupt system of personality-based distribution».
«Hardworking Americans who deserve a chance at the American dream should not be stigmatized, humiliated, or excluded from opportunities because of their race or gender», - Trump noted in the order. «These illegal DEI and DEIA policies also threaten the safety of American men, women, and children across the country, diminishing the importance of individual dignity, abilities, work, and determination in selecting people for positions and services in key sectors of American society, including all levels of government, and medical, aviation, and law enforcement communities. However, time after time, the American people have seen firsthand the catastrophic consequences of illegal, corrupt discrimination that prioritized how people were born, rather than what they were capable of doing».
There is no single federal DEI department in the government. There are several offices and, therefore, programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These programs provide
The exact number of federal DEI employees is unknown, but Trump specified several roles that these employees hold, «including, but not limited to, positions of 'Chief Diversity Officer'» in the government, «meaning that any employee attached to these labels will lose their job».
According to NBC Chicago, there are over 2 million jobs in the federal work process
