President Donald Trump criticized Attorney General Letitia James, suggesting that the Cornell fraternity students at the center of the rape allegations «will not receive fair treatment» if she is involved in the proceedings. Trump made this statement on October 2, responding to reporters' questions at the White House regarding James’s appointment as special prosecutor in the case.
According to Trump, «Letitia James is a corrupt person», - and he expressed concern for those who will come under her scrutiny, adding that «they will not receive fair treatment». Requests for comments from James’s office went unanswered.
Trump’s relationship with James is strained, especially following her high-profile civil investigations into his business dealings. In 2022, James filed a civil lawsuit for $ 454 million against Trump, his family, and his company, but in 2026, a New York appellate court dismissed the case.
On the same day, New York Governor Kathy Hochul directed James to take on the criminal investigations related to the alleged gang rape case. James stated, «We will review the facts, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and if justified, we will initiate prosecution».
Recently, a former Ivy League student filed a lawsuit against Cornell and seven fraternity members. The lawsuit claims that the alleged victim, who was 20 years old at the time of the incident, felt intoxicated after a party at her sorority and club on October 19, 2024. She went to the fraternity, where she allegedly had a drug slipped into her drink and was sexually assaulted.
Local station WBNG published text messages from a Snapchat group called «Chi Phi Actives», - in which one of the men informed his brothers about a «free girl upstairs», - using a derogatory term. The alleged victim claims she was sexually assaulted by several fraternity members until the early morning hours of the following day.
So far, there have been no arrests in the case; however, the local district attorney stated that they are considering the possibility of reopening it in light of the civil lawsuit. Attorneys representing the mentioned fraternity members have firmly denied the allegations.
