Donald Trump announced a new name for the Gulf of Mexico: the Gulf of America. During a press conference on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the Republican stated that the ocean basin belongs to America, but who really owns it? And is it possible to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico?

Learn more about Trump’s plans for this region below.

Trump proposed changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Speaking to journalists at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the president-elect noted: «We are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. The Gulf of America — what a beautiful name. And it is appropriate».

He added that Americans «do most of the work there» and claimed that the Gulf is «ours».

Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene praised Trump’s plan through Truth Social that day, further stating that she intends to introduce a bill to change the name.

«President @realDonaldTrump has started his second term with a GREAT start», - Greene wrote. «I will immediately introduce a bill to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!»

Trump sparred with Mexico on a number of issues, but the most pressing was immigration. During his first presidency from 2016 to 2020, Trump told voters that he planned to build a wall along the border between the US and Mexico. According to the Associated Press, America built over 400 miles of wall along the border during Trump’s first term as president.

According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the US «asserts sovereignty» over the Gulf of Mexico «from the airspace down through the water column and into the subsoil».

According to AP, Trump may be able to change the name, but not every country is obligated to agree. Both Mexico and the US are part of the International Hydrographic Organization: an intergovernmental organization that ensures proper surveying and mapping of the world’s water spaces. The IHO sometimes names seas, and countries may refer to specific water spaces by different names in their documentation, according to AP
