Winona Judd spoke about her strained relationship with sister Ashley Judd, revealing that they have decided to take a break from communication. In the latest issue of People magazine, Winona noted that they are currently giving each other space: «We are taking a break, which every family can relate to. She is doing her thing, and I am doing mine».
Although Winona acknowledged that they are not «connected» at the moment, she added that everything could «absolutely» change in the future. She explained that Ashley travels a lot and is often away, and this is not related to anything specific.
More than a year ago, Winona hinted at their complicated relationship. In an interview on Clint Black’s show «Talking in Circles», - she said: «Ashley is fine. I don’t see her very often, and we’re not as close as I would like us to be, but that’s because success has taken us away from each other. It’s funny. There’s a little sadness because being famous takes you away from home».
In the same interview, Winona recalled how she took on a parental role in their relationship while their single mother, Naomi Judd, worked. She noted: «That's why we have such a strange connection, because she calls me 'Sister Mom.' And it makes me a little sad because I couldn’t be her sister». Winona emphasized that she bore a lot of responsibility and that Naomi put her in responsible situations.
In 2022, Naomi died by suicide at the age of 76.
