Luigi Mandjione, suspected of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, comes from a wealthy family. Mandjione was arrested by police in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9, 2024, five days after Thompson was shot in the back in New York. Four months later, he pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges, two of which were dismissed by a judge almost a year later.
At a press conference in 2024, the New York Police Department reported that an anonymous tipster called authorities after seeing Mandjione at a McDonald’s restaurant, realizing he matched the description of the suspected shooter.
«He is a serious person of interest», - said New York Mayor Eric Adams, according to CBS News. «He matches the identification description we were looking for. He also possesses several items that we believe will link him to this incident».
Items found on Mandjione included a gun and fake identification. He was later charged with Thompson’s murder.

Mandjione is a student from the Ivy League. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering, computer, and information sciences, according to his LinkedIn. He previously attended the private all-boys school Gilman in Maryland.
The names of Mandjione’s parents are unknown. However, according to several sources, including Los Angeles Magazine, they own the Turf Valley resort and Hayfields Country Club.
According to the Hayfields Country Club website, it is a «family private country club with views of Oregon Ridge» in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The club offers members «exclusive access to an elite golf course, practice facilities, entertainment events, and casual dining», - as well as an «active lifestyle».
The Turf Valley resort is located in Ellicott City, Maryland, and has a vast 1000-acre property for guests, according to the resort’s website.
According to the Daily Mail, Mandjione is the younger cousin of Maryland House of Delegates member Antonio «Nino» Mandjione. The delegate has been in office since 2019 and is a member of the Republican Party.
Antonio has not publicly commented on his younger cousin’s arrest or his possible connection to Thompson’s murder.
The Mandjione family released a statement after his arrest through Nino’s account, which read: «Unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding Luigi Mandjione. We only know what we have read in the media. Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to Brian Thompson’s family and ask for prayers for all involved. We are devastated by this news».
