Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare from early 2021 until he was shot in December 2024. He worked with the health insurance giant for about 20 years, according to his LinkedIn profile.
During his time at the company, he earned an estimated fortune of over $ 40 million, according to several sources.
It is unclear who shot Thompson. The New York Police are still investigating the suspect’s identity and reviewing surveillance footage in the area. Authorities are offering a $ 10,000 reward to anyone who can provide useful information about the case.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, spoke to NBC News and said that her late husband received «several threats» before he was shot.
«There were some threats. Mostly, I don’t know, lack of coverage?» Paulette said over the phone to the publication after Thompson’s death. «I don’t know the details. I just know that he said there were some people who were threatening him. … I can’t give a thoughtful response right now. I just found out about it and am trying to comfort my children».
«Decline», - «protect», - and «deposit» are words commonly associated with insurance company strategies that are said to try to avoid paying claims, according to Yahoo! Finance. These three words were found on the ammunition used to kill Thompson. Police have not yet confirmed whether the messages are related to the motive
