The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas reached a new extreme with the death of senior Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh.

On Wednesday, July 31, the 62-year-old Haniyeh was killed while in Iran at the inauguration of Masoud Pezeshkian, who was taking the oath as president of Iran. According to IRNA, a «aerial navigation guided projectile» was fired into his room. Iran and Hamas accused Israel of this, and the deputy leader of the Palestinian militant group, Khalil Al-Hayya, stated that Israel «will pay the price for such a heinous crime».

This alleged Israeli strike was in response to a deadly rocket strike in Druze over the weekend, which resulted in the deaths of 12 children. Israel claims the strike was carried out by the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah. Hezbollah denies the strike.

Ismail had been a member of the internationally recognized terrorist group since the 1980s. According to his board partner Khalil, he stated: «No matter how painful Haniyeh’s killing is to us, we assure the nation that our choice in Hamas and resistance continues with a clear strategy… which does not deviate from the martyrdom of a leader or 10».

Hamas expert Michael Milstein described the deceased figure. He noted that the political leader was not such a «powerful» person: «He was responsible for propaganda, for diplomatic relations, but he was not very powerful… He was a more moderate, skilled leader, but he doesn’t understand anything about military affairs», - according to the Associated Press.

In addition to the recent incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed his nation and spoke about the current war. «Three weeks ago we attacked Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif. Two weeks ago we attacked the Houthis, in one of the farthest attacks carried out by the Air Force. Yesterday we attacked Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr… We will settle scores with those who harm us, who kill our children, who kill our citizens, who harm our nation; the blood is on his head… I did not give up then and I do not give up today», - he said according to CNN.

The war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023 after October 7, the deadliest attack on Israel since the Holocaust. Netanyahu stated that the number of casualties was equivalent to 20,911 in one day
