Participants of the controversial reality show «The Swan» have spoken about the side effects of unsuccessful plastic surgeries. In the new Hulu documentary «The Swan: Behind the Mirror», - former contestant Beth Lay stated that the show’s creator, Nili Galan, did not provide them with the necessary tools for self-care after returning home. She noted that her left breast «became encapsulated» and shifted.
Lay sought help from Dr. Terry Dubrow, who «corrected» her issues following surgeries performed in both seasons of the show. However, according to her, even after the intervention, her breast still did not look right, and she had to «just accept it».
Other participants also shared their problems. Cindy Ingle revealed that her implant ruptured after filming the first season, and she was unable to do anything for several years. Karrie Bravata noted that her «temporary teeth» kept falling out, while Kristi Garza faced the necessity of having multiple teeth removed due to damaged gum tissue.
Karrie’s sister, Gina Bravata, accused the show’s dentist, Sherri Worth, who lost her license in February 2017 following allegations of fraud and negligence. She pointed out that all participants were left with serious dental issues after treatment by Worth.
The documentary «The Swan: Behind the Mirror», - which premiered on September 29, focused on several participants who shared their difficult stories with the show. Director Erin Lee Carr told Variety in an interview that producers were looking for individuals who were vulnerable and had mental health issues, which could lead to negative consequences.
The film also revealed the strict limitations the participants faced, including exercising six days a week and adhering to a strict diet of 800−1200 calories per day. Kristi Garza mentioned that after the show, her life went downhill: she was evicted from her apartment, divorced, and struggled in her role as a mother. Ultimately, she concluded that perhaps her anger was directed not at the show’s creators but at herself for believing in the dream sold to her.
