A Louisiana elementary school teacher and coach has been arrested on charges of sexual crimes involving a minor. Ponchatoula Police Chief Bry Layrisson stated in a Facebook post that Trey Sparks was taken into custody following a complaint regarding messages allegedly exchanged between him and the minor.
Sparks, 30, was employed as a teacher at D.C. Reeves Elementary School and was also a basketball coach at Ponchatoula High School at the time of the alleged crime. Layrisson noted that after receiving the complaint, detectives began an investigation and found numerous inappropriate materials related to minors on Sparks' phone.
Sparks was arrested on October 6 and charged with four counts of possession of child pornography and one count of prohibited sexual conduct between a teacher and a student. He was booked into Tangipahoa Parish Jail. The Ponchatoula Police are working with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation, and additional charges may be filed against Sparks depending on the findings.
It is unclear how Sparks met the alleged victims and how long they communicated. However, Layrisson clarified that the investigation does not involve current students of D.C. Reeves Elementary School or Ponchatoula High School.
Following the arrest, the Tangipahoa Parish School District confirmed that Sparks has been placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The district’s statement emphasized that the safety and well-being of students remain a priority. Sparks began working in the district on February 18, 2021.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the investigation to contact the Ponchatoula Police. It is unclear whether Sparks has entered a plea or hired an attorney following his arrest.
