Threat of dismissal: DEI employees under threat from the new administration

Employees of the federal Department of Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI) are facing the threat of dismissal by the new administrative leadership. Learn more below.
DEI stands for diversity, equality, and inclusion. Many companies implement DEI policies and practices in the workplace to ensure equal opportunities for all employees. DEI includes representation of all races, genders, and sexual orientations. Programs include anti-bias training and resource groups. Efforts are aimed at helping marginalized employees thrive in the workplace. The initiative began in the 1960s-70s during the civil rights movement, when employees began filing discrimination lawsuits with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), as reported by CNN. Former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed his 1965 executive order prohibiting workplace discrimination.

Donald Trump’s executive order prohibits DEI programs. It orders DEI employees to be placed on administrative leave «immediately», - as reported by CNN. On Tuesday, a letter was sent from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management instructing employers to inform their DEI employees «no later than 5:00 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday» that they will be placed on immediate administrative leave and ultimately terminated. The letter noted that the agency is taking steps to close/terminate all EDIA initiatives, offices, and programs. Employers are also instructed to remove any websites or social media related to DEI efforts, and to cease upcoming trainings. Another letter sent on Wednesday warned: «There will be no negative consequences for timely reporting of this information. However, failure to report this information within 10 days may result in negative consequences», - as reported by Reuters.
In 2021, former President Joe Biden signed Executive Order 14035, which called on DEI to «strengthen the federal workforce by promoting diversity, equality, inclusivity, and accessibility». Its goal was to create a workforce that «will harness the full diversity of the nation [and] eliminate barriers to equal opportunity», - as reported by FOX.
Trump ordered DEI employees to be placed on administrative leave «no later than 5:00 pm Eastern Time on Wednesday» and ultimately fired.
The exact number of DEI employees in the United States is unknown, however, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) represents over 800,000 federal employees, as reported by the BBC
