«The terrible puppet bot M3GAN will return in the sequel — find out why fans fell in love»

M3GAN is not your typical life-size doll — and horror fans agree with that. «I'm a bit of a connoisseur of strange dolls», - said James Wan, who is credited with the story behind M3GAN, in an interview with IndieWire in 2023. «I just like the idea of an inanimate object that looks like it could be alive and may even have life within it. Whether it’s a life that was imbued by a supernatural entity, or you, with your fractured mind, projecting life onto it. One more supernatural, the other more psychological, but I’m drawn to both aspects of the genre».
Now a sequel is set to be released later this year. Find out why audiences loved the killer doll bot by watching the original horror film.
M3GAN, the brainchild of horror maestro James Wan (the «Conjuring» franchise) and Akela Cooper, is a story about artificial intelligence straight from hell. 8-year-old orphan Katie (Violet McGraw) finds herself with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams), a toy roboticist, after the sudden death of her parents.
Overwhelmed by the prospect of raising a grieving child, while juggling the pressures of her high-stress job, Gemma decides that a good idea is to bond a doll prototype named M3gan (Amy Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) with her niece. Hoping, she reasons, that it will occupy Katie and provide her with companionship and playtime.
But M3gan has other plans, as her reasoning abilities lean more towards the dark and destructive.
M3GAN was originally released in theaters in early 2023 and is now available through various streaming options. According to JustWatch, if you have a Prime Video subscription with the Starz add-on, you’re in luck — the horror hit is available for streaming at no extra cost. Without a Starz subscription, you can either purchase or rent the film through Apple TV, Prime Video, or Fandango at Home.
Indeed, M3GAN 2.0 made its first appearance with a campy trailer released on February 3, 2025, where the killer doll dances to Chappell Roan’s song «Femininomenon» and taunts viewers, asking, «Missed me?» The sequel will debut in theaters on June 27, 2025
