Mark Fuhrman, the former detective and witness in the high-profile O.J. Simpson trial, passed away on May 12, 2026, several sources reported on May 18. He was 74 years old and reportedly suffered from cancer.
Fuhrman was a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department. He retired in 1995 and became a true crime writer, as well as a television and radio host.
Fuhrman testified during the Simpson trial and was the police officer who found the bloody glove at the crime scene where Simpson’s ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, were found dead in 1994. During the proceedings, it was revealed that Fuhrman had used a racist slur in several recorded interviews. Simpson’s defense team used this to accuse Fuhrman of perjury, claiming that he planted key evidence in a racially motivated conspiracy to convict Simpson.
When asked if he had planted or fabricated key evidence in a racially motivated scheme to convict Simpson, Fuhrman invoked his Fifth Amendment right and refused to answer.
Simpson was controversially acquitted of murder charges in 1995. In 1996, Fuhrman pleaded guilty to one count of perjury for lying about using a racist slur. He apologized for using racist language and stated that he was not a racist.
The cause of Fuhrman’s death had not been disclosed at the time of publication, but TMZ reported that he died from «an aggressive form of throat cancer». He was diagnosed with the disease in 2025 and spent a week in the hospital before his death, according to the publication.
