Nicholas Brendon, the actor known for his role as Xander Harris in seven seasons of the popular series «Buffy the Vampire Slayer» alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar, passed away, as reported by his family on March 20, 2026. He was 54 years old. In the years leading up to his death, Brendon struggled with various health issues, including a congenital heart defect and cauda equina syndrome.

«With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon», - his family stated in a release obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. «Most people know Nicky for his acting work and the characters he portrayed on screen. In recent years, Nicky found his passion in painting and art. He loved sharing his enthusiasm and talent with family, friends, and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and tirelessly pursued creativity. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of his essence».

The statement also noted: «Our family asks for privacy at this time as we mourn his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who showed love and support».

As mentioned, Brendon passed away at the age of 54, just a month before his 55th birthday. He was born on April 12, 1971.

According to his family, Brendon died in his sleep «of natural causes».

Brendon’s family noted in their statement that «it is no secret that Nicholas had difficulties in the past», - and that the late actor «was taking medication and undergoing treatment to manage his diagnosis, and at the time of his death, he was optimistic about the future».

In August 2022, Brendon was hospitalized after a heart incident and was diagnosed with tachycardia—a congenital heart defect that causes an abnormally fast heart rate.

Brendon also suffered from a condition known as cauda equina syndrome (CES), which led to several spinal surgeries in his later years. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, CES occurs when there is «dysfunction of several lumbar and sacral nerve roots» of the cauda equina—a bundle of nerves at the end of the spinal cord
