Representative Jerry Connolly from Virginia passed away from cancer in May 2025 — just a few days after wishing former President Joe Biden good luck in his battle with prostate cancer. Connolly was 75 years old.
«With great sadness, we announce that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at home this morning», - his family said in a statement on May 21, 2025, according to Axios.
Connolly made a statement about Biden three days before, calling cancer a «terrible disease». The late congressman wrote, «Deeply saddened to learn of my friend Joe Biden’s diagnosis. My heart is with him and the entire Biden family as he battles this terrible disease».

Connolly held his position as the U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 11th congressional district from 2009 until his death in May 2025.
In April 2025, Connolly made a statement announcing that he would not seek reelection to Congress, instead endorsing Democrat James Walkinshaw as his potential successor in 2026.
«I want to start by thanking you for your kind wishes and compassion as I continue to fight my diagnosis», - Connolly wrote in his letter. «Your love and support have given me strength in my battles — both against cancer and in our joint defense of democracy».
Stating that he had promised transparency about his condition, Connolly noted that his cancer had returned and his time in public service was coming to an end.
«After grueling treatments, we learned that the cancer, while initially contained, has now returned», - he wrote. «I will do everything I can to continue to represent you and thank you for your kindness. The sun is setting on my time in public service, and this will be my final term in Congress. I will soon step down as the senior member of the oversight committee. Without bitterness and with a full heart, I enter this final chapter, proud of what we have achieved together over 30 years. My loving family and staff support me. My extended family — you have all been a joy to me».
In May 2025, just a few weeks after announcing his departure from public service, Connolly passed away from esophageal cancer. This form of cancer affects the esophagus: the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common symptoms of esophageal cancer include difficulty swallowing, chest pain, pressure or burning, cough, unintentional weight loss, worsening indigestion or heartburn
