After the news of his passing, learn more about Brother Marquis here.

Born in Rochester, New York in 1966, Brother Marquis began his rap career with Rodney-O as a member of The Caution Crew. He was later discovered by DJ Mr. Mixx, who was one of the founders of 2 Live Crew. After one member of the group left, Mr. Mixx invited Marquis to Florida to join the group. Some of the group’s singles were already prepared by the time Brother Marquis joined, but he was a key member in many of their hits, including their debut album The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are.

For those unfamiliar with 2 Live Crew’s music, their songs often featured sexually explicit, humorous lyrics and the use of profanity. The group ran into trouble in 1990 due to their album As Nasty as They Wanna Be. A court in Florida deemed their record «legally obscene», - making its sale illegal, according to The New York Times. Brother Marquis was arrested along with his groupmates Wong Won and Luke Skywalker in 1990 after performing some songs at a strip club in Florida. After the arrest, their lawyers defended their use of language in court and ultimately won.

The group referenced the arrest on their next album Banned in the U.S.A., which sampled Bruce Springsteen’s song «Born in the U.S.A». on the title track.

2 Live Crew disbanded after releasing their 1991 album Sports Weekend. After the breakup, Mark moved to Georgia, where he began performing comedy routines. He also formed the group 2 Nasty with DJ Toomp. Occasionally, he made guest appearances on various songs, including Ice-T's track «99 Problems».

Throughout the rest of the 90s, 2 Live Crew released albums sporadically, but after several years following their last album in 1998, The Real One, the group remained dormant. Nearly a decade later, Brother Marquis and Wong Won reunited in 2006 to discuss their differences, and ultimately they reunited under the name 2 Live Crew. Wong Won passed away at the age of 53 in 2017.

Brother Marquis admitted that he became a Christian in a 2018 interview on The Morning Bounce. He shared that he regularly attends church. He promised that this would not affect his performances and would not make him stop performing explicit songs from the group
