Tom Stoppard, a playwright born in Czechoslovakia and raised in England, whose works transformed modern theater, has passed away. On November 29, 2025, his agency, United Agents, confirmed in a statement that he died «peacefully» at his home in Dorset, surrounded by family.
The statement also added: «He will be remembered for his works, their brilliance and humanity, as well as for his wit, audacity, generosity of spirit, and deep love for the English language. It was an honor for us to work with Tom and to know him».
Tom Stoppard was born in 1937 in Zlín, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). During World War II, his family fled Europe and eventually settled in England. He grew up in Bristol and later studied in Nottinghamshire, embracing an English identity that would significantly influence his career and creativity.
Although he became one of the most renowned playwrights in the UK, his early life as a refugee profoundly impacted the themes of exile, identity, and history explored in his later works.
Stoppard won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for co-writing the film «Shakespeare in Love». Throughout his career, he also received numerous Tony and Olivier awards, as well as international accolades recognizing his contributions to drama and film.
In 1997, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to literature, solidifying his status as one of the most influential writers in the UK.
Stoppard was married three times: first to Josie Ingle, then to Miriam Stoppard (née Miriam Stern), and from 2014 until his death, to Sabrina Guinness.
He had four sons: Oliver Stoppard and Barnaby Stoppard (from his first marriage) and Ed Stoppard and Will Stoppard (from his second marriage).
Tom Stoppard passed away in November 2025 at the age of 88. Following the announcement of his death, theaters in London’s West End dimmed their lights in tribute, and writers, actors, and politicians around the world paid homage to his influence.
In his statement, King Charles III also paid tribute to Stoppard, calling him «one of our greatest writers»
