Vince Zampella, the creator of the Call of Duty video game franchise, died in a car accident in Los Angeles, California, on December 21, 2025. Although the California Highway Patrol did not name the victims in its initial statement, Electronic Arts confirmed Zampella’s death in its announcement.

«This is an irreplaceable loss, and our hearts go out to Vince’s family, his loved ones, and everyone touched by his work», - said Electronic Arts in a statement. «Vince's impact on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching».

Describing Zampella as «a friend, colleague, leader, and visionary», - Electronic Arts noted that the late game designer’s work helped «shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to influence how games are made and how players interact with each other for generations to come».

«Vince was a titan and a legend in this industry, a visionary and a force that shaped teams and games like Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, the Star Wars Jedi series, and Battlefield», - wrote Respawn in a tweet.

Electronic Arts confirmed that Zampella was one of two individuals involved in the accident on December 21, 2025.

In a press release, the California Highway Patrol described the scene of the incident, which occurred on the Angeles Crest Highway shortly after 12:30 PM local time that day, according to the BBC. Officials reported that the vehicle was traveling south on the highway, approaching mile marker 62.70.

There were two passengers in the vehicle when it «veered off the road, struck a concrete barrier, and became fully engulfed in flames», - explained the CHP.

The CHP did not name the victims in its initial statement, awaiting notification of their next of kin.

«A passenger was ejected from the vehicle, while the driver remained trapped», - added the CHP. It remains unclear whether Zampella was the driver or a passenger. The CHP concluded that both individuals in the vehicle «died from their injuries».

Authorities also reported that they were unsure whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal accident, according to People.

At the time of publication, the official cause of Zampella’s death had not been disclosed.
