Originally from Texas, Cecile Richards was the daughter of former Texas governor Ann Richards and lawyer David Richards. She graduated from the prestigious Brown University and laid the roots of feminism in her teenage years — she helped her mother in the campaign for Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who won the Roe v. Wade case, in her campaign in the Texas Legislature. She was a member of the Ford Foundation board, known for its efforts in human welfare, founder of America Votes, and founder of the Texas Freedom Network.

Richards was also a member of the advisory board of Let America Vote. In 2006, she became the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. In 2018, according to The Cut, she stepped down from her most prominent role after 12 years. «It's hard for me to leave, but I’m ready to step aside and allow someone else to take on the responsibility in times when I believe we are incredibly strong in this country», - she said in an interview with CBS This Morning in April 2018, before her departure.

In 2012, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. For her lifetime activism, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in November 2024.

According to CBS News, in 2023 Richards was diagnosed with glioblastoma (brain cancer). «The last six months have been crazy — but thanks to incredible medical workers and the support of family and friends, I’m doing well», - she wrote on social media in January 2024. «I've always felt happy in my life, and now I feel happy: being here, doing this work, alongside all of you».

Richards passed away on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Although the official cause of death was not announced, the Richards family reported that she passed away after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer over the past year
