Comedian and actress Ruth Buzzi, known for her performances on the Rowan and Martin’s «Laugh-In» show, passed away in May 2025 at the age of 88. The news of her death became known approximately ten years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease — a progressive brain disorder that affects memory and cognitive abilities, ultimately leading to loss of autonomy. In addition to Alzheimer’s disease, Buzzi also suffered several strokes in 2022. But, being a legend, she always maintained her sense of humor.

Below you will learn about Buzzi’s life, career, and health, remembering her comedic career.

Buzzi is known for her role as Gladys Ormphby on the Rowan and Martin’s «Laugh-In» show. She used her purse as a deadly weapon, easily eliciting laughter from fans. In a 2016 interview with Nick Thomas, Buzzi recalled her iconic character, the purse-swinging Gladys.

«Many people ask me to hit them with my purse», - Buzzi said at the time. «In fact, a few years ago we were at a party in Beverly Hills, and in walked Elton John. He immediately came up to me and said, 'Oh my goodness, Ruth, please hit me with your purse. It’s been on my bucket list for years!'»

Buzzi passed away from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease, her representative Mike Eisenstadt told The Hollywood Reporter in May 2025.

The late Golden Globe winner faced several health issues throughout her life. In 2012, Buzzi was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, which ultimately led to her death in 2025. In 2022, it was revealed that she had suffered several strokes, which, as reported by her husband Kent Perkins, left her «bedridden and unable to act» at the time.

Nevertheless, Buzzi always maintained her unique sense of humor. After news of her strokes in 2022, the late actress from Rhode Island kept her sense of humor, turning to X (formerly known as Twitter).

«Some people are lucky; I had a different kind of luck», - Buzzi wrote at the time, adding «thank you» for «all your love, messages, cards, letters, and sweet tweets!» She then jokingly concluded: «And while my final wishes include cremation, I’m not ready to turn myself into ashes just yet. Kisses-kisses-kisses».

Nearly three years later, Buzzi continued to joke, even just a few weeks before her death. In April 2025, she tweeted: «You know you’re old when your walker is equipped with curb sensors and an airbag»
