Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the best-selling memoir
Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to the bestselling memoir «Woman in Me» by Britney Spears. John M. Chu, whose film «Wicked» is soon to be released through the studio, has started developing the project with Mark Platt, his partner from «Wicked» and producer of «La La Land».

The book has sparked huge interest in Hollywood. It was previously reported that Shonda Rhimes, Brad Pitt’s Plan B company, and Margot Robbie were interested in the project. Sony, Warner Brothers, Fox, Disney, and Netflix were also vying for the project.

However, on Thursday Spears shared news of a «secret project» with fans, revealing that Platt, who has «always made [her] favorite movies», will be her partner.

The film, as yet untitled, will be based on Spears' memoirs, which have sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. They first reveal Spears' incredible journey and the power behind one of the greatest performers in pop music history. Written with honesty and humor, Spears' book sheds light on the enduring power of music and love, as well as the importance of a woman telling her story on her own terms. The book was published in October 2023 and quickly rose to the top of The New York Times bestseller list.

No casting decisions have been announced yet.

Universal Pictures acquired the rights for a huge eight-figure sum.

Mark Platt was originally not a producer; he transitioned from an acting career to producing, realizing he felt more creative stimulation behind the scenes.

He founded his own film company, Marc Platt Productions, and has earned a number of awards — one Golden Globe, two Tonys, two Emmy awards, and three Oscar nominations. He has been a creative force behind a number of successful films, including «The Insider», «Sleepless in Seattle», «Jerry Maguire», «La La Land», and others.

Most notably, he was a producer of the mega-hit «Wicked», which he brought to Broadway in 2003 and remains one of the highest-grossing shows to this day
