University of Arizona suspends activities of six fraternities
The University of Arizona has suspended the activities of six fraternities in connection with an investigation into misconduct, including allegations of physical violence, hazing, and drug and alcohol use.

According to Chrissy Lieberman, the university’s Dean of Students, her office is investigating numerous reports of misconduct involving nearly half of the 21 fraternities on campus. An internal memorandum obtained by Arizona’s Family was published on October 6. Lieberman did not specify all the violations but noted that they range from creating an unsafe environment for students to physical violence and drug and alcohol use.

The fraternities Zeta Beta Tau, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Theta Xi, and Phi Gamma Delta have been suspended. All fraternities on campus have also been temporarily suspended from their activities until all chapter advisors can meet with the dean. During this time, fraternities are not allowed to host, attend, sponsor, or participate in any organizational events, with only business meetings among fraternity members permitted.

The suspensions were announced more than a month after a meeting between university president Dr. Robert C. Robbins and fraternity presidents on August 27, where he emphasized that the university would not «tolerate further violations that put students at risk». Lieberman noted in the memorandum that the university has received several reports from parents, students, and the community regarding issues within the fraternities.

The Dean of Students' office is currently overwhelmed with the number of cases that its staff can investigate simultaneously, and each of these cases is related to a fraternity. Lieberman stressed that «it is time for the Greek community at the University of Arizona to step up and set an example of good behavior». The Dean of Students' office and the university police are investigating the allegations against the fraternities. Some fraternities have previously had a history of violations, and some are under criminal investigation.
