Tropical storm Erin has become the latest concern in the Atlantic Ocean. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has provided updates on the strength and path of Erin for the coming days. What does this mean for the East Coast of the United States? Get updates on the storm below.

On Tuesday, August 12, Erin was located approximately 690 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands in Africa around 5 am Eastern Time, according to the National Hurricane Center. Erin had maximum sustained winds of about 45 miles per hour, as well as higher gusts.

On Thursday, August 14, the NHC reported that Erin is expected to become a hurricane on Friday, August 15, and was located approximately 860 miles east of the North Libyan Islands. By 5 am Eastern Time, the system has maximum winds of 50 miles per hour.

According to the forecasted path, Erin is moving west and is expected to continue this for the next few days, as meteorologists have indicated.

As seen on Zoom Earth, Erin’s path continues west towards the Dominican Republic. However, development has shown a slight shift to the east, according to the NHC and other forecasts.

Although it is still too early, the NHC also indicated that Erin may impact parts of Puerto Rico, the Libyan Islands, and the Virgin Islands.

Yes, the National Hurricane Center announced that Erin will become a hurricane on Friday, August 13. In an earlier message, the NHC noted that there are currently «no coastal watches or warnings in effect». Additionally, the NHC stated that there are currently no threats to land.

However, Erin may intensify as it moves over warmer waters, becoming the first major hurricane of this season category 3 or higher by Saturday, August 16.
