Tropical Cyclone 9, also known as Hurricane Helen, is heading towards the southeastern part of the United States. According to multiple sources, the storm is expected to impact the Gulf Coast, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and other southern states later this week. As the tropical cyclone continues to form in the Caribbean Sea, we have details on what to expect from Hurricane Helen below.

According to The Weather Channel, Helen’s path will hit the western coast of Florida, then turn north towards Georgia, South Carolina, and other southern states as the storm moves north.

According to multiple sources, Helen is expected to make landfall on the western coast of Florida in the evening on Thursday, September 26. It will impact the «Big Bend» area of the state, and flooding levels could reach up to 15 feet. Rain will begin on Wednesday, September 25, before the wrath of the hurricane approaches.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency in Florida. Earlier this week, he tweeted: «We are tracking potential Tropical Cyclone #9, which is likely to intensify this week as the system enters the Gulf of Mexico. I have signed Executive Order 24−208, declaring a state of emergency in 41 Florida counties that may face potential storm impacts, and directing Florida agencies to prepare as needed. We will continue to track the storm’s path and inform Florida residents».

Although the storm’s path is focused on the western coast of Florida, DeSantis warned Floridians at a press conference: «You could be outside the cone and still experience serious consequences». He cited Tampa Bay as a location where the storm is expected to hit.

Hurricane Helen is currently referred to as «potential Tropical Cyclone #9» because it has not fully formed in the Caribbean Sea. Once a tropical storm reaches speeds of 74 miles per hour or more, it is considered a typhoon or hurricane depending on where it formed, according to NOAA. The term «hurricane» is most commonly used for storms that form in the North Atlantic and central and eastern parts of the North Pacific Ocean.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Cyclone 9 will become Hurricane Helen on Tuesday, September 24, as it strengthens in the ocean
