Vice Second Lady Usha Vance fell while descending the helicopter stairs with her 11-week-old son Alex in her arms. The incident occurred at Andrews Base in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on October 5, as seen in a video posted on X.
In the footage, Usha, holding onto the railing, nearly fell forward on one of the steps but ultimately managed to regain her balance, turning towards the railing and smiling at an officer nearby while gently patting Alex on the back. After that, the mother and son waited for the exit of Vice President J.D. Vance and their 4-year-old daughter Mirabel. The couple also has sons Evan (9 years old) and Vivek (6 years old).
Usha and the children accompanied J.D. on a trip to Anchorage, Alaska, where he spoke at a Republican National Committee rally in support of Senator Dan Sullivan. Usha and J.D. became parents for the fourth time in July. In a joint statement, they said, «We are happy to announce that our son, Alex Neil Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are healthy and happy, and our children are excited to meet their little brother».
Alex is the first child born to a sitting vice president in over 150 years, following the son of Vice President Schuyler Colfax in 1870. In September, Usha drew attention by stating that their newborn son has security detail, which, according to her, «seems absurd because he is always with me». She noted that raising Alec in the public eye has its challenges, but people have generally been very kind.
