John played the character of James Evans Sr., who was the head of the Evans family. However, after three seasons on the show, John’s character was written out of the storyline. Over the years, the actor revealed that he had many disagreements with the show’s writers.

During a 2017 interview, John noted that when filming «Good Times», there were «no African-American writers on the set, and some of the relationships they wrote, both for my character and, frankly, for some of the other characters, made me say, 'No, we can’t do this, we can’t do this'. And they said, 'What do you mean, we can’t do this?'»

«They continued their arguments and everything else, and I looked at each one of them and said, 'Well, how many years have you been black? This doesn’t happen in the community. We don’t think like that. We don’t act like that. We don’t allow our children to do that'», - John said, according to Ebony magazine.

According to PEOPLE, K.C. confirmed that John passed away from natural causes. In his statement, K.C. mentioned that his late father had «transitioned to another world».
