The world of music mourns the loss of a true musical genius. Brian Wilson, a brilliant mind, co-founder, and creative force of the legendary group The Beach Boys, has passed away. He was 82 years old.
«We are brokenhearted to announce that our beloved father, Brian Wilson, has passed away», - wrote Brian’s children in a statement posted on his Instagram on Wednesday, June 11. «We are unable to express our feelings in words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time, as our family grieves. We understand that we share our grief with the whole world».
Brian’s death came about a year after it was revealed that the late musician had a neurocognitive disorder. His family did not confirm the cause of death at the time of publication.
Born on June 20, 1942 in Inglewood, California, Brian began his musical journey at an early age when he and his two younger brothers, Dennis and Carl, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, formed The Beach Boys in the early 1960s. From humble beginnings in their family’s living room, the group became one of the most influential and successful in music history.
As a creative genius and primary songwriter of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson went beyond popular music, creating complex arrangements and innovative production techniques that set them apart from their peers. His unique vision and dedication to musical perfection turned each song into a work of art, showcasing his amazing ability to capture the essence of California’s sunny lifestyle, a sound that became known as the «California sound».
With an unparalleled ability to create mesmerizing melodies and complex harmonies, Wilson’s compositions were more than just music. His natural gift for melody and harmony was evident in the group’s hits such as «Surfin' USA», - «California Girls», - and «Good Vibrations».
Behind the scenes of fame and success, Brian struggled with personal problems and mental health issues for many years, including drug and alcohol abuse. The struggle led him to withdraw from touring with The Beach Boys in the mid-1960s.
Despite his difficulties, Brian continued to create groundbreaking music. His dedication to his craft and his pursuit of musical perfection remained unwavering.
Brian is survived by his daughters Carnie and Wendy (born in 1968 and 1969 respectively), who later achieved success in music as two-thirds of the group Wilson Phillips. He welcomed the girls with his first wife Marilyn Rovell, who divorced him in 1978. Brian later adopted five children with his wife Melinda Kae Ledbetter, whom he married in 1995. They met in the late 1980s but separated in 1989 before reuniting in 1991. Melinda passed away in January 2024
