Below are five facts about Giorgio Armani, from his life and career to the legacy he created.
In the early 1950s, Armani pursued a medical path, enrolling at the University of Milan in the Faculty of Medicine. After about three years, he left the institution and joined the army.
Long before he became a globally renowned fashion designer, Armani served in the Italian army. He worked at a military hospital in Verona until the end of his service in 1957.
Armani was in a relationship with the late Italian architect, fashion designer, and co-founder of Armani, Sergio Galeotti. Although Armani kept his personal life private, he confirmed that he and Galeotti were in a long-term romantic partnership. Galeotti passed away in 1985 from complications related to AIDS.
«After Sergio’s death, it was painful», - Armani told GQ magazine in 2015. «I also had to learn a lot about the company to continue its existence. Many people did not believe that I could do it. They did not believe in me. It was disappointing to discover — even within my own company — that there were people who thought I couldn’t do it. So there was a drain. And I had to roll up my sleeves and learn to communicate with lawyers, publicists… It was Sergio who believed in me».
From the very beginning of the Armani fashion house, Galeotti encouraged the designer to «see a bigger world».
«Sergio made me believe in myself», - Armani said, adding: «When I travel, I take his photo. Something remains. His spirit remains. Surely. He lives. I see Sergio everywhere, and I am sure he sees me. And I hope that everything I have done, he knows about».
During an interview with GQ in 2015, Armani tearfully admitted that he wanted to start his own family.
«Many», - he said. «I would like to have many children».
In 2006, Armani became one of the first major designers to advocate for healthier standards among models, discussing anorexia.
«It's time for clarity. We all need to work together against anorexia», - Armani said when Uruguayan model Luisel Ramos passed away after an extreme diet. As a result, Madrid Fashion Week banned models with a body mass index of 18 or less. «I never liked skinny girls, and I never made them walk the runway», - Armani added
