His creative genius and unwavering dedication to the culture spawned countless hits, defining a music era that continues to resonate with fans worldwide». Learn more about Irv below.
Irv was a talented scout in the 1990s, and we owe him for discovering DMX and Jay-Z and bringing them to Def Jam. Later, he became the executive producer on DMX’s debut album, according to CBS News. He also has production credits for tracks like «Can I Live» from Jay-Z's debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996.
Irv co-founded Murder Inc. in 1998, a label that helped launch successful artists like Ja Rule and Ashanti into gramophone superstars. Irv himself won a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album for his production credits on Ashanti’s debut album.
In 2022, Irv received a multimillion-dollar deal to sell 50% of his company while retaining ownership. He shared his reasons for the big sale with Billboard: «I'm a very spiritual person, and it’s God and my father, who passed away on November 1, taking care of his boy. It’s very unreal, but I would give every dollar of the 300 million to bring my father back. But he’s with me, and I feel his presence».
In 2023, he openly shared the obstacles he faced due to diabetes on the Drink Champs podcast. He stated: «My diabetes, my numbers were high. They said, 'Pops, you can’t be on Drink Champs.' I said, 'I won’t drink and smoke.' What it does, it starts to break down your body». When asked if his diabetes is «under control», - he answered «no». The hosts then asked if he avoids certain foods, and Irv replied, «I'm going to enjoy life».
Irv has been battling diabetes for many years, and last year he suffered a stroke and walked with a cane, as reported by TMZ. A representative of Irv shared what has been happening to him after surviving the stroke: «Irv has been battling diabetes for many years, which led to a minor stroke over six months ago. Since then, he has changed his diet to a healthier one. He has successfully fully recovered. Irv is not in a rehabilitation facility. He is at home with his family, enjoying life»
