Ray Shero, former NHL general manager, has passed away. He was 62 years old. A successful general manager who also played hockey himself while in college, he went on to lead two major clubs. Although the official cause of Shero’s death has not been disclosed, there were rumors of an undisclosed illness that he was reportedly battling.

The Pittsburgh Penguins released a statement in response to Shero’s passing. Noting that the team is «deeply saddened» by his departure, the Penguins stated in their social media statement that Shero «played a key role in ushering in a new era of Penguins hockey, marked by the 2009 Stanley Cup victory».

New Jersey Devils President and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald followed suit and also shared a statement, noting that the team is «shocked and deeply saddened» by Shero’s passing.

«The organization is extremely grateful for the impact Ray had during his time in New Jersey, and undoubtedly, his imprint is present in the current group we see today, both on the ice and off», - the statement continued.

Shero was the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils. Before becoming a general manager in the league, he played hockey for most of his life. During his college years, Shero played for the men’s team at St. Lawrence and became captain in the 1984−1985 season.

In 1982, Shero almost got his chance when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings, although he never officially played in the NHL. He later worked as an assistant general manager for the Ottawa Senators and then the Nashville Predators.

The official cause of Shero’s death has not been disclosed to the public. However, according to Pittsburgh Hockey Now, he was reportedly undergoing treatment for cancer.

Shero was married to his wife Karen, and they had two children.
