If you’ve been following the news even a little, you’ve probably heard about the grand success of the film «Obsession» — a horror movie created by Kerry Barker. The plot centers around a shy twenty-year-old guy named Bear (Michael Johnston), who makes an ill-fated wish for his childhood friend Nikki (Inde Navaratte) to love him more than anything in the world. Instead of a romantic story, Bear’s «Wish Ivy» turns Nikki into an obsessed, possessive, and aggressive creature, and viewers debate who is truly the aggressor and who is the victim.
Inde has received much praise for her acting abilities, as well as for how the low-budget film pushed her and the team to experiment with stunts, vocals, and facial expressions.
Now that her career is rapidly taking off, and she is becoming not only a scream queen but also one of the most sought-after stars, Hollywood Life has prepared five facts about Inde that you should know!
1. Inde is originally from Tucson, Arizona, but eventually moved to Los Angeles, California.
2. Since her father served in the military, Inde and her family moved frequently. By her teenage years, Inde had attended several schools.
3. In pursuit of her dream in the film industry, Inde landed a role in the popular Netflix teen series «13 Reasons Why», - playing the character Estela de la Cruz in the fourth season.
4. If you’ve already seen «Obsession», - you probably remember the scene in the driver’s seat where Inde, playing Nikki, slams her head against the car window and repeatedly hits her friend Sara (Megan Lawless) against the steering wheel while Bear screams from the passenger seat.
5. Inde performed this dramatic scene herself without a stunt double, wearing a helmet under her wig. And as if that wasn’t enough, she had to shoot the scene in one take.
«Nikki's movement is something Kerry and I created from scratch, not because we didn’t want to take inspiration», - Inde explained in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. «As soon as we started working on the project, we got right to it. We shot the film in 26 days, and it was an independent project, so we didn’t have many resources. But that created an organic movement for me».
Acknowledging that she is «not a dancer», - the actress noted that «I used to dance, but [director] Kerry was standing opposite me, mimicking something with his body, and then I would do it my way, and he would say, 'No, no, like this.' And we mirrored each other. Technically, Kerry Barker was the choreographer».
All those strange facial movements of «scary Nikki» in the film — that’s all Inde: from her displeased face to her sinister smile.
«Yes, everything in the film, whether it’s facial expressions or vocals, is me. We didn’t use any AI or CGI», - she told THR. «Everything was extremely practical. I know some things were altered for effect to match the sound design. But Kerry and I had a lot of fun creating the voices. It was scary, especially during the long monologue. That was my audition scene. I just remember thinking, 'I'm going to enjoy this because who cares?' Either you go all out or you don’t go at all»
