Christian Horner was once one of the most influential figures in Formula 1, serving as the team principal and head coach of Red Bull Racing for almost 20 years. Praised for turning the team into a dynasty that won championship titles, his legacy took a sharp turn in 2025 when he was fired.
«Red Bull has relieved Christian Horner of his operational duties as of today (Wednesday, July 9, 2025) and appointed Laurent Mekies as the team principal of Red Bull Racing», - said a Red Bull representative in a press release.
From his early racing days to his high-profile departure from Red Bull, learn more about Horner below.
Horner led the Red Bull Racing team as team principal and general manager from 2005 until his dismissal in 2025. Under his leadership, the team became one of the most successful in modern Formula 1 history, winning multiple Constructors' Championships and Drivers' Championships with stars like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. His nearly two-decade tenure made him one of the most prominent figures in the sport.
«We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the past 20 years», - said Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull’s managing director of corporate projects and investments. «With his tireless dedication, experience, expertise, and innovative thinking, he played a key role in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1. Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team’s history».
When Horner took over the leadership of the Red Bull Racing team at just 31 years old in 2005, he became the youngest team principal in Formula 1 history. Despite his age, he quickly proved himself as a strategic and effective leader, helping to turn the newly formed team into a championship contender in just a few years.
Before taking on the leadership of the team, Horner had his own racing career. He competed in Formula Renault and Formula 3000 in the 1990s. In 1997, he founded his own team, Arden International, which competed in Formula 3000. Realizing that his strengths lay in management rather than racing, Horner fully transitioned to owning and developing the team.
Horner married Geri Halliwell — best known as Ginger Spice from the Spice Girls — in May 2015. The couple is raising their son Monty, born in 2017.
In early 2024, Horner became the subject of an internal investigation at Red Bull Racing following allegations of inappropriate behavior by a female colleague. Initially, Red Bull cleared Horner after an independent investigation. When the employee appealed the decision, a second investigation confirmed the initial findings, and the company again dismissed the allegations
