Sometimes, even reaching the age of 30, you still have to make some questionable mistakes.
Winona Ryder, 52, has had her share of star-studded romances over her long career, but according to her interview for the August issue of Harper’s BAZAAR 2024, she doesn’t look back on all of them fondly.
«At 30, I had two catastrophic relationships that… they weren’t wrong, but that was before you would ever think to Google someone», - she said.
«When I look back, I think, 'What the hell was I thinking?' I dated the kind of people who only a few weeks in would tell you they were already in a relationship with someone else. And you just think, 'What the hell?'»
She did not specify which relationships she was referring to, but Ryder was previously engaged to Johnny Depp, whom she dated from 1990 to 1993. She has also dated Matt Damon, Rilo Kiley guitarist Blake Sennett, and Helmet vocalist Page Hamilton.
The «Stranger Things» star mentioned her younger romances after discussing her iconic character, who is being revived for the upcoming film «Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice».
Lydia Deetz, once a teenager who saw ghosts in the original 1988 film, is now a widow taking pills. She is dating, but not in love, with her sleazy manager Rory (played by Justin Theroux). And her teenage daughter, Astrid (played by Jenna Ortega), says, «My mom is a very broken person».
Some traits of Lydia reminded Ryder of her younger self. She said that reading her past diary entries from her 30s made it clear that she was struggling. «You clearly write when you’re depressed or upset. I usually don’t write when I’m really happy», - she said.
«I reread and just asked myself, 'How?' I clearly tried to cope with… «Ryder fell silent. «It was very sad. I clearly tried to believe in the best and show compassion to myself. But I cared about everything except myself».
Although looking back can be difficult for many reasons, Ryder seems content with her love life now, as she has been in a relationship with her partner, 53-year-old Scott Mackinlay Hahn, since 2011.
«He's so wonderful. He really is. I’m very lucky», - she explained
