Parents arrested in Arizona for abuse of their daughter

In Arizona, a couple has been arrested for reportedly forcing their 9-year-old stepdaughter to sit on a balcony in 40-degree Celsius temperatures for at least four hours as punishment for holding a book incorrectly. Jennifer Carrillo and her husband Jose Carrillo Ayala were arrested on September 17 and charged with child abuse.
According to the affidavit, Jennifer sent the girl to the balcony, which is her usual method of punishment. It was also reported that the girl and her 12-year-old sister had to sit on plastic lids from containers wrapped in garbage bags in case they got dirty. The girls spent a long time in this position, experiencing pain.
The girl managed to escape to a neighboring balcony to ask for help, after which authorities were called to the scene. She told investigators that she was punished for how she held the book and that she spent four hours on the balcony feeling hungry and thirsty. A neighbor who found the girl reported to the police that he heard her say she was afraid that «CPS would take her away».
Upon examination at the hospital, the girl showed signs of abuse and severe malnutrition. She weighed about 19.5 kilograms, which is below the fifth percentile for her age. She also had bruises all over her body, hair loss, and underdeveloped teeth. Her 12-year-old sister also underwent a medical examination, which revealed similar injuries.
Jose Carrillo Ayala confessed to child abuse, including the use of a belt. It was established that the girls did not have a separate room and slept on the floor in the living room. Both parents were placed under arrest with a bail set at $ 50,000. It is unclear whether they have made any statements or hired attorneys following their arrest.
