The premiere of the 15th season of the series «Chicago Fire» began with a dramatic event that left one of the firefighters in a dangerous situation. According to showrunner Victor Teran, the consequences of this incident will be felt throughout the season, as it affects a central character and his interactions with other heroes.

In the first episode, which aired on October 7, the team from Firehouse 51 responded to a warehouse fire that occurred at the end of the 14th season. The firefighters, led by Stella Kidd, managed to evacuate from the roof before it collapsed. However, during the rescue operation, Joe Cruz heard cries and attempted to save those left inside the building, which led to a tragic incident: part of the roof fell on him, and he was seriously injured.

Although Cruz survived, he was left paralyzed, at least temporarily. During a three-month examination, a doctor informed him and his pregnant wife that there was a small chance of regaining function in his leg. Teran noted that instead of killing off the character, they decided to explore how Cruz’s injury would impact his life and the lives of his colleagues.

Cruz was cleared in connection with the incident, but the MRI results were discouraging. He expressed doubts about whether he would be able to return to work as a firefighter. Teran also added that the events surrounding Cruz’s injury would have deep consequences for other characters, especially for Kelly Severide, who will struggle with the repercussions of his decisions.

Additionally, with Cruz’s departure in the middle of the season, a new character may join the team, or one of the existing firefighters may be promoted. «I don’t want to reveal details, but it will be interesting and unexpected», - Teran added. The series «Chicago Fire» airs on NBC on Wednesdays at 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
