Suspect in police officer’s murder arrested in Philadelphia
The suspect was arrested after shooting a police officer in Philadelphia and attempting to kill other officers. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated at a press conference that Shane Syber was killed in West Philadelphia on October 10 while responding to a report of a man with a weapon.

Bethel noted that Syber, who was 40 years old, left behind a widow, a seven-year-old son, and a three-year-old daughter. According to him, Syber’s family was with him when he was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. During the incident, another police officer was injured; however, his name and details of his injuries were not disclosed. It is known that the surviving officer, who is 33 years old, has five children and is in stable condition after surgery.

Syber had served in the Philadelphia police for 10 years and was well-known in the community. Bethel added that this will be a period of mourning for the department, but they will cope with this loss together. District Attorney Larry Krasner reported that the suspect was identified as Eric Lewis, who was arrested and charged with murder, killing a law enforcement officer, and attempted murder after he allegedly tried to shoot nine other officers.

Police responded to a report of a man with a weapon around 12:20 a.m. When officers arrived on the scene about 30 minutes later, Lewis allegedly began shooting at them. He then attempted to flee but was found after falling from a tree. It is unclear whether Lewis has entered a plea or hired an attorney following his arrest.

Governor Josh Shapiro expressed condolences regarding Syber’s death and ordered that the flags of the United States and Pennsylvania be flown at half-staff in his honor.
