CNN commentator on politics Van Jones warned that the performance of TV host and model Amber Rose in support of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at the national convention in Milwaukee was «likely the most dangerous performance for the Democratic coalition».
After Rose’s performance at the Republican Party convention on Monday evening, people had mixed reactions to the American model with a forehead tattoo, as well as the decision of the RNC to invite her as a speaker and the potential influence she could have on voters. However, Jones believed that the model spoke well, and despite any doubts that Republicans may have had about inviting a supporter with a controversial past, the Republican Party achieved a «bunker breakthrough» only with her participation.
«This is a young woman of color», - Jones noted. «She describes an experience that many people have, feeling that, perhaps, if you are surrounded by liberals, you are criticized too much, you may not have the opportunity to express your opinion, and she described it very well, and she is much more famous than any of us here».
He added: «To the extent that these guys are trying to destroy our coalition, this was a real bunker breakthrough».
CNN host Anderson Cooper supported Jones' opinion on the effectiveness of Rose’s performance. He replied to Jones, saying: «And that’s one of the things we talked about… She’s speaking through the camera to the audience at home».
The 40-year-old model had previously criticized Trump at the beginning of his presidency in The Cut magazine in 2016: Hillary Clinton was only supported by «unattractive» celebrities. She added: «He's just an idiot. He’s so weird. I really hope he doesn’t become president».
Because of this, she caused a stir with her support for Trump in May, posting photos of herself in a bikini and a MAGA hat on social media, as well as photos of her meeting with Trump and former First Lady Melania Trump.
It was also a controversial decision for many Republicans, as they do not usually associate themselves with supporting feminism and activism in sexuality, which was central to the goals of the SlutWalk founder.
In 2015, she organized a SlutWalk in Los Angeles, a protest event aimed at drawing attention to gender inequality. «I'm going to fight with people», - she said, speaking to The New York Times in 2022. «I don’t like to see injustice when it comes to women, the LGBT community, victims of sexual violence or rape».
Although some may think that SlutWalk does not align with the conservative views of the Republican Party, Rose believes that her fight for women and marginalized groups perfectly aligns with her support for Trump.
«I realized that Donald Trump and his supporters don’t care if you’re black, white, gay, or straight. It’s all love. And that’s when I realized: these are my people. This is where I belong»
